We’re proud to share this meaningful project carried out in Guinea-Bissau, together with the World Health Organization (WHO), the WHO Regional Office for Africa, the WHO Country Office in Guinea-Bissau, the Ministry of Public Health of Guinea-Bissau, the National eHealth Center, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and The Global Fund.
This initiative brings modern telemedicine equipment to the Bubaque Medical Center, on the remote island of Bubaque, part of the Bijagos Archipelago — where access to healthcare has always been a major challenge.
Doctors rarely travel to these islands, and patients often face long and complex journeys to reach hospitals on the mainland.
With this new system, patients can now benefit from teleconsultations with specialists at the Simão Mendes National Hospital in Bissau, who can remotely assess vital signs, view medical images and data, and guide on-site healthcare workers in real time.
Beyond technology, the project also includes a comprehensive training programme for local healthcare professionals — enabling them to use telemedicine tools effectively, ensure accurate data collection, and strengthen clinical decision-making.
This capacity-building component is essential to ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of the initiative.
By combining innovation, local engagement, and international collaboration, this project is helping to bridge the gap between remote communities and specialized care, ultimately improving health outcomes and access to medical expertise for all.
